Mission

The School of Microelectronics, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SoME, SJTU), aims to prepare top talents for IC industry and is engaged in the research of high-performance chips with independent intellectual property. SoME is also striving to be recognized as a top-ranked IC training base in China.

School Events

  • May 2003, The Ministry of Education and Ministry of Science and Technology approved SJTU to build the first national training base for IC talents.
  • September 2004, Authorized to recruit undergraduates.
  • January 2007, Recognized as “excellent” in the routine assessment of the national training bases for IC talents.
  • May 2007, Moved to the new building of Microelectronics in Minhang campus.
  • September 2007, Authorized to set up doctor’s degree discipline of Chip Design and Systems and begin to recruit Ph.D.

Faculties and Students

As of March 2010, there are 5 professors and 7 associate professors. 82% of the faculty have a Ph.D. degree, 41% of the faculty have abroad experiences, 41% have industrial experiences. There are 261 undergraduates, 153 master students, over 210 master engineering students, 14 Ph.D. students, 1 post-doctoral candidate.

Research

SoME pays a great attention to scientific research. In recent three years, the school has undertook more than 15 national research programs, such as National Major Science and Technology projects, National 863 programs and National Natural Science Foundation projects. SoME has achieved good results in the research of satellite-navigation RFIC, low-power DSP technology and EDA. SoME also puts emphasis on the VLSI implement for future applications, such as auto- electronics and medical & bio-electronics.

Facilities

The building of School of Microelectronics, covering an area of 10,000 square meters, is situated at Minhang Campus, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. In the past few years, the school has invested heavily in facility enhancement. The school have 5 teaching labs, 3 research centers, more than 30 servers, about 500 chip design terminals and also have professional systems and software including EDA tools, FPGA & DSP development tools, system architecture simulation tools, SoC design platforms, chip testing platforms.

International Cooperation

In order to develop international IC talents, the school has signed agreements in succession with Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Saint Etienne (France), Concordia University (Canada), University of Washington (USA), the National University of Singapore and so on for joint educational programs. Since 2005, with the international aid programs, over 40 students have been sent abroad to further their study or receive credits both in China and abroad. Foreign experts are routinely invited to give technical seminars to the students and faculties.

Industry Collaboration

SoME has established various collaborations with many international famous companies, such as Intel, IBM, SMIC, Xilinx, Teradyne, Cadence, Synopsys and so on. The collaboration include joint courses, joint labs, university donations, joint research projects, technology forums, industry sponsored competitions, scholarship and internship. The collaboration brings SoME students to the front of a whole IC industry chain including design, fabrication, packaging and testing.
